Pakistani Auto Industry In The Eyes Of A School Boy

Car is an amazing discovery. In the past, people didn’t think such a machine could exist. Still, someone made it, which shows the power of the human mind. My books tell me that the first-ever car was made in 1886 by a German Carl Benz, called the Benz Patent Motor Car. This vehicle was powered by a gas engine and was the birth certificate of the Automobile Industry. In Pakistan, the first vehicle was made in 1953 at the National Motors plant in Karachi.
Since then, the three market leaders in Pakistan auto industry are Honda Atlas, Toyota Indus, and Pak Suzuki. Currently, the big three have the highest shares of the market. According to the latest data from the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), Suzuki sold over 60% of the total cars this year, followed by Toyota and Honda.
Personally, I am a Honda fan because of the fascinating range of its cars and brand equity. Honda Civic is our family car, and it’s totally amazing.
I still think there should be competition in the market and a lot of variety for the consumers. I think the new automobile manufacturers coming into the industry require some time to settle. The new manufacturers such as KIA, Hyundai and MG are making their brand equity, and soon they will give hooligan time to the three market leaders.
EVs in Pakistan
Then there are Electric Cars. Electric Vehicle (EV) technology has been introduced in many countries. Big names like Tesla are working on it. EVs have entered the market in Pakistan, but it will take decades for us to convert to electric cars.
Pakistan is on the list of most polluted countries in the world, whether air, land, or water. EVs can help us and our next generations breathe clean air. The Government of Pakistan and PM Imran Khan are working on it, but they should be more deliberate on the subject.
Car Prices in Pakistan
The prices of cars and bikes are shockingly increasing day by day, which is not at all acceptable. As PakWheels Chairman, Mr Suneel Munj, says that the budget 2021 is only beneficial to wealthy people, not the poor, and I totally agree.
In Pakistan, 24.3% of the population lives below the national poverty line. The Government should think about this issue and try to help and support poor people. They gave relaxation to cars in Budget 2021-2022 and then shockingly increased the petrol prices. If a person buys a car, he needs petrol to drive it. At the end of the day, he may face some financial issues due to the sky-high petrol prices. I think the Government is playing with the citizens, but maybe they will take good initiatives in the future.
